Budget-Friendly Bliss: A Stunning Before & After Tour of Our First Apartment Transformation
As promised, the wait is over! We’re thrilled to finally share the incredible before and after pictures of our first apartment. This journey has been a true labor of love, filled with countless hours of planning, a few spirited debates over tricky Ikea assembly instructions (a rite of passage for any new homeowner!), and numerous trips across DC to find just the right pieces. Yet, through it all, we’ve watched our apartment steadily transform from an empty canvas into a space that truly feels like our own, a comfortable haven where we can relax and create memories.
While there are always a few finishing touches remaining – mainly adding more cherished photographs and inspiring artwork to the walls – we couldn’t be more excited to present what we’ve accomplished so far. Our aim was to create a home that is both stylish and functional, reflecting our personalities without breaking the bank. You’ll see a thoughtful blend of new, affordable finds, beloved hand-me-downs, and creatively repurposed items throughout this tour.
To make your viewing experience as smooth as possible, we’ve conveniently included the “before” pictures right alongside their “after” counterparts in this post. There’s no need to scroll back and forth between different articles! As you explore each room, be sure to check out the captions. They provide details on where we sourced many of the items you’ll see, offering insights into our budget-friendly and resourceful decorating approach. We hope you enjoy this intimate look into our home transformation!
Living Room: From Bare Space to Cozy Hub
The living room is often the heart of a home, and ours started as a blank slate, waiting to be infused with warmth and character. Our vision was to create an inviting space perfect for relaxation, entertaining, and simply enjoying our new life together.

The transformation here focused on creating comfort and defining distinct zones within the open space. The centerpiece of the living room, a comfortable Ikea Kivik sofa in natural grey, was a thoughtful gift from Connor’s grandfather, providing ample seating and a touch of modern simplicity. Beside it, an Ikea Poang lounge chair, a fantastic find from Craigslist, carves out a cozy reading nook, demonstrating that stylish comfort doesn’t have to come at a high price. The functional and minimalist Ikea LACK coffee table and media console (also a clever Craigslist score) keep the space uncluttered and serve essential purposes. Adding a touch of timeless elegance and personal history, the beautiful oriental rug was Connor’s grandparents’ first oriental rug, grounding the room with rich texture and a story. Lighting comes from a stylish lamp from BB&B, while a set of discounted nesting tables from BB&B (just $25!) serve as versatile sofa side tables, perfect for holding drinks or books. A personal touch is added by one of my own paintings from high school art class, proving that art doesn’t need to be expensive to be meaningful and impactful.
Just off the living room, a small hallway presented an opportunity for an unexpected style statement. We repurposed a “Target desk” – which we fortunately received for free from the previous tenants – into a chic and functional hallway console table. This piece now offers a convenient surface and a design element in an otherwise overlooked transition space.
Dining Area: A Space for Meals and Memories
Our dining area, like many spaces in our new apartment, began as a simple, undefined space. We envisioned a warm and inviting spot where we could share meals, host friends, and build lasting memories. The goal was to blend functionality with a cozy, personal aesthetic, leveraging cherished family pieces to create a unique feel.

AFTER:
The heart of our dining area is a truly special piece: our parents’ first dining table, a robust and timeless piece that carries years of family history. Surrounding it are comfortable dining chairs, also hand-me-downs from our parents, ensuring continuity and comfort. Above the table, a charming lamp, a hand-me-down from my older sister (believed to be from BB&B), casts a warm glow, creating an intimate ambiance. To define the space and add a layer of texture, we chose an Ikea GISLED rug for an incredibly affordable $19.99. This budget-friendly addition instantly pulled the room together, making it feel complete and cozy. The combination of inherited furniture and inexpensive new additions created a dining area that is both practical and deeply personal, perfect for our first home.
Office/Guest Bedroom: Maximizing Multi-Functional Space
In a first apartment, maximizing every square inch is crucial. Our spare room needed to serve a dual purpose: a productive home office for daily tasks and a comfortable, welcoming guest bedroom for visitors. The challenge was to create a harmonious balance between functionality and a relaxed aesthetic, ensuring neither purpose felt compromised.

This room beautifully illustrates the power of smart furniture choices and personal touches. We incorporated an old Ikea table, a piece my parents originally bought and which Ikea thankfully still sells due to its timeless design, providing a spacious and sturdy workstation. Above the desk hangs one of my own paintings from college, adding a burst of color and personal inspiration. The workspace is illuminated by a classic lamp, a treasured heirloom from my grandfather, which adds a vintage charm. To enhance the guest room aspect, a comfortable Ikea Poang lounge chair (Connor’s own) offers a cozy spot for reading or unwinding. A soft rug from BB&B, an affordable find at just $25, grounds the seating area and adds warmth, while a hand-me-down bookshelf provides essential storage for books and office supplies. This room seamlessly transitions from a focused office environment to a comfortable retreat for guests, embodying smart, multi-functional design.
Master Bedroom: A Serene Personal Sanctuary
Our master bedroom was envisioned as a tranquil retreat, a personal sanctuary where we could unwind after a long day. Starting with bare walls and an empty floor, the goal was to create a calm and cohesive space using a blend of soothing colors, comfortable textiles, and smart, personalized storage solutions.

The most impactful change in the master bedroom was the paint color: Benjamin Moore “Repose Gray,” lightened by 50%. This subtle, serene shade instantly transformed the atmosphere, creating a peaceful backdrop for relaxation. Our luxurious Vanessa floral bedding from Pottery Barn, a wonderful move-in gift from my parents, adds a touch of elegance and comfort, making the bed an inviting focal point. On either side, sleek glass lamps and shades from Ikea provide soft, ambient lighting without overwhelming the space. An affordable yet stylish print and frame, also from Ikea, contributes to the room’s aesthetic with a modern touch. For bedside tables, we ingeniously repurposed Connor’s old bookshelves, a clever and sustainable solution that provides both storage and character. Connor’s dresser and a laundry hamper (possibly from Pier 1 Imports?) complete the functional elements, ensuring the room remains organized. The result is a master bedroom that feels utterly tranquil and perfectly tailored to our taste, demonstrating how a few key elements can create a profound sense of calm and personalization.

Kitchen Hallway & Kitchen: Organized and Inviting
The kitchen, often considered the heart of a home, was a critical area for transformation. We aimed to make it not only highly functional but also a bright, inviting space that encouraged culinary creativity. This involved smart storage solutions and thoughtful touches to open up the area and enhance its efficiency.
BEFORE (Kitchen Hallway):
AFTER (Kitchen Hallway):
The kitchen hallway, often an overlooked space, became a testament to smart organization. We installed Ikea Grundtal series stainless steel open shelves, hooks, and spice storage, transforming a plain wall into a highly efficient and visually appealing storage zone. These modern elements keep essentials within easy reach and add a touch of industrial chic. Etched glass containers from Ikea further enhance the organized look, providing stylish storage for staples. Even our microwave, a practical acquisition for just $10 from previous tenants, fits seamlessly into this streamlined setup. This area now maximizes vertical space, proving that even small transitional zones can be both beautiful and exceptionally functional.
BEFORE (Main Kitchen):
AFTER (Main Kitchen):
Our main kitchen area received a significant upgrade in both form and function. A key decision was to remove and store one of the upper cabinet doors, instantly opening up the space and creating an airy, more inviting feel. This simple change allowed us to display some of our attractive tableware from BB&B, adding a personal touch. For improved safety and accessibility, we installed an Ikea magnetic knife rack, keeping sharp knives neatly organized and off the counter. A practical utensil holder, also from BB&B, keeps cooking tools within easy reach. One of our favorite additions is a beautiful porcelain round mirror, a cherished hand-me-down from my Grandfather, which reflects light and adds a unique decorative element to the kitchen wall. These thoughtful adjustments have transformed the kitchen into a brighter, more efficient, and personalized space that we genuinely love spending time in.
BEFORE (Kitchen Counter):
AFTER (Kitchen Counter):
The counter area was also streamlined for maximum usability. By removing clutter and organizing essentials, we created a clean, functional workspace that’s perfect for meal prep and cooking. The goal was to ensure everything had its place, making daily kitchen tasks more enjoyable and efficient.
BEFORE (Kitchen Wall):
AFTER (Kitchen Wall):
To complement the primary kitchen area and provide additional workspace and storage, we introduced an Ikea kitchen cart, a fantastic bargain we acquired from our previous tenants. This mobile unit adds much-needed counter space for meal preparation and can be easily moved to suit our needs, making it an invaluable addition to our small kitchen. It perfectly embodies our approach to decorating: finding practical, affordable solutions that enhance both functionality and style. This thoughtful addition ensures that every aspect of our kitchen is optimized for convenience and a pleasant cooking experience.
Apartment Balcony: Our Outdoor Oasis
Even a small apartment balcony holds immense potential to become a delightful outdoor extension of your living space. Our balcony started as a typical, unassuming outdoor area, but we saw an opportunity to transform it into a charming retreat for morning coffee or evening relaxation, proving that even compact spaces can be made beautiful and functional.
BEFORE:
AFTER:
Our balcony was transformed into a charming outdoor oasis with just a few simple, budget-friendly additions. We took standard terra cotta pots from a hardware store and gave them a personal, rustic touch by painting them with leftover chalkboard paint, perfect for growing herbs or small plants. For comfortable seating, we added two durable plastic Adirondack chairs from BB&B, priced at just $19.99 each, offering a relaxed spot to unwind. Completing the setup, a versatile black table – part of the nesting table set seen in our living room, also from BB&B – serves as a convenient surface for drinks or snacks. The result is an inviting outdoor space that feels like a natural extension of our home, providing a lovely spot to enjoy the fresh air and city views.
Whew! We hope you thoroughly enjoyed this detailed tour of our first apartment’s transformation. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience to turn this space into a true home, reflecting our style and preferences. If you have any questions about specific items, design choices, or our budget-friendly strategies, please don’t hesitate to ask – we’d love to share more insights!
We’ll be back soon with a delicious new muffin recipe, the very first tested baking creation to come out of our new kitchen, and we’re thrilled to report it was a resounding success! In the meantime, have a wonderful rest of your weekend. Luckily, the scorching 100-degree weather here in DC is finally cooling down to a mere (!) 90+ degrees for my 24th birthday tomorrow. Here’s hoping I don’t melt in the bakery while celebrating!
