Ultimate Apple Cranberry Pie: A Guide to Flaky Crust and Vibrant Filling

There’s nothing quite like a homemade pie, especially when it features the perfect blend of sweet and tart flavors. This exquisite homemade Apple Cranberry Pie, bursting with juicy apples and vibrant fresh cranberries, offers a delightful tart zip thanks to fresh orange zest. It’s all encased in my signature go-to flaky, all-butter pie crust, ensuring every bite is a testament to perfect pastry.

If you’re still contemplating your Thanksgiving Day dessert menu, consider your search over. This holiday simply wouldn’t be complete without a spectacular pie, and this Apple Cranberry Pie is poised to become your new annual tradition. While some form of apple pie graces my table every year, this particular rendition, with its perfect balance of flavors and textures, has undoubtedly become my favorite.

The secret to its irresistible appeal lies in the thoughtfully crafted filling. A medley of baking apples is infused with the warming spice of cinnamon, sweetened with both regular and light brown sugar, and brightened with the zest and juice of fresh oranges. Fresh cranberries are then folded in, adding a crucial tartness that cuts through the sweetness and provides a beautiful “zip.” As the cranberries soften during baking, they release their vibrant color, transforming the pie filling into a stunning pink hue that’s as appealing to the eye as it is to the palate. This thoughtful combination creates a depth of flavor that is truly remarkable, making this a standout dessert for any special occasion.

While the vibrant apple cranberry pie filling is undeniably fantastic, let’s turn our attention to the real unsung hero of this dessert: the homemade all-butter double pie dough. I completely understand the allure of store-bought pie doughs – especially during the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving preparations – but the truth is, the unparalleled flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture of a homemade crust simply cannot be replicated. Trust me on this; once you taste the difference, there’s no going back.

Over the years, I’ve experimented with countless pie dough recipes, some far more intricate and demanding than others. This particular all-butter pie dough recipe has emerged as my new gold standard. It’s wonderfully straightforward, requiring minimal steps, yet it consistently produces an incredibly flaky, tender, and robust pie crust. This crust is not only delicious on its own but also provides the perfect foundation for various fillings, holding up beautifully without becoming soggy.

Maple Bacon Brussels Sprouts. Sweet and salty Brussels sprouts side dish with crispy bacon, balsamic vinegar, and maple syrup!

As the holiday season approaches, many of us find ourselves pondering the crucial question: what side dishes will grace our festive tables? For me, the answer often involves a beloved green vegetable – Brussels sprouts! Today, I’m thrilled to share a fantastic, stress-free option that’s bound to become a new favorite: Maple Bacon Brussels Sprouts. My admiration for Brussels sprouts is well-documented, bordering on an obsession.

Years ago, I dedicated an entire week to exploring various Brussels sprout recipes, a fond memory I often revisit (#brusselssproutsweek!). Since then, I’ve had to consciously hold back from inundating my readers with even more ways to enjoy these charming little green gems. It brings me immense pride that one of the most popular recipes on my site features Brussels sprouts, particularly my roasted Brussels sprouts and squash with dried cranberries and Dijon vinaigrette. That dish is a perennial fixture on my Thanksgiving table, but for those who adore the rich flavors of bacon, these Maple Bacon Brussels Sprouts offer an equally compelling and utterly delicious alternative, hitting all the right notes of salty, sweet, and smoky.

What makes this particular recipe stand out, especially during the busy holiday season, is its remarkable simplicity and efficiency. It’s fantastically easy to prepare, takes up absolutely zero precious oven space (a huge plus when your oven is already crammed with a turkey and other casseroles!), and requires only four core ingredients. This makes it an absolutely fabulous choice for a last-minute side dish, ensuring you can impress your guests without added stress on the big day.

The Enduring Appeal of Cornish Pasties

A Cornish Pasty (pronounced PASS-tee) holds a special place in the hearts of many, myself included, as the ultimate comfort food. If you’re new to the world of pasties, prepare to be introduced to a truly delicious experience! These traditional savory British pastries originated from Cornwall, England – a place steeped in personal memories for me, as I used to visit my late grandmother there every summer during my childhood. A true staple of the region, no summer vacation felt complete without indulging in as many pasties as possible.

Traditionally, Cornish pasties are semicircular in shape, encased in a crimped shortcrust pastry dough, and generously filled with meat and vegetables. They are often likened to the British equivalent of a hearty meat pie. However, my family always leaned towards the equally popular vegetarian versions, typically filled with a delightful mixture of cheese, onions, and potatoes. This particular combination of flavors became the inspiration for the recipe you see today, offering a comforting taste of tradition with a contemporary, accessible twist.

The Weekly Mix: Celebrating Summer, Delicious Doughnuts, and Fresh Perspectives

A beautifully plated dish, symbolizing a delightful weekly mix of food and lifestyle

Happy weekend, everyone! It feels surreal to acknowledge that we are already stepping into the early days of June. Has time truly flown by this quickly? It’s hard to believe we’re almost halfway through 2017! The arrival of June always brings a renewed sense of energy and excitement, signaling the true beginning of summer adventures, longer days, and countless opportunities for new experiences. From sunny outdoor meals to relaxed evenings, this season promises an abundance of joy and delicious discoveries.

A Sweet Start to the Weekend: National Doughnut Day Delights

Adding to the weekend cheer, today marks National Doughnut Day, arguably my most anticipated food holiday of the year! There’s something undeniably comforting and celebratory about a fresh, warm doughnut. If you’re looking for a quick and incredibly satisfying doughnut fix, my ricotta beignets with lemon cardamom sugar and lemon glaze are an absolute must-try. The batter comes together effortlessly, making them a perfect last-minute treat for any occasion. They offer a delightful airy texture and a sophisticated flavor profile that stands out.

Connor and I wasted no time celebrating this glorious day a little early last weekend. We made a special trip to Dorite Donuts, the newest doughnut shop to open in our vibrant neighborhood. Exploring new local eateries is always a highlight, and their innovative creations certainly did not disappoint. These culinary adventures are part of an ongoing effort to keep my Chicago restaurant guide thoroughly updated with the best dining spots and hidden gems the city has to offer. Be sure to check back soon for the latest additions and recommendations to plan your next food tour!

Weekend Plans and a Fresh Look

This particular weekend is extra special as we’re delighted to host my parents-in-law, who are visiting us from out of town. It’s always a joy to spend quality time with family, share meals, and explore Chicago together. We have a few fun activities planned, from enjoying the city’s beautiful parks to discovering new local markets. These moments of connection and shared experiences are what truly make life richer and more meaningful.

In other exciting news, I underwent a bit of a personal transformation yesterday: I got a much-needed haircut and, for the very first time in my life, received a color treatment! Yes, you read that right – my first ever! My incredibly talented hairdresser suggested trying balayage to enhance the natural highlights in my hair, adding dimension and a sun-kissed look without a harsh line. I am absolutely loving the results; it’s incredibly low maintenance, grows out beautifully, and is surprisingly gentle on my hair. It’s truly remarkable how a subtle change can make such a significant impact on one’s confidence and overall feel. If you’re in the Chicago area and seeking a top-notch salon experience, I wholeheartedly recommend Solo Salon. Be sure to ask for Julio – and tell them I sent you! He truly has a gift for hair artistry.

While a quality salon visit is an investment, I realized it had been almost an entire year since my last haircut. Time truly flies when you’re busy! This experience served as a great reminder to prioritize self-care and indulge in those little luxuries that make you feel refreshed and vibrant. Sometimes, a fresh cut and a touch of color are exactly what you need to embrace the new season with renewed vigor.
