A Taste of Autumn: Crab Feast, Pumpkins and Sweet Gelato

Cracking the Code: An Unforgettable Maryland Crab Feast Experience at Cabin John

My Saturday afternoon was gloriously occupied by one of Maryland’s most iconic culinary traditions: the Maryland crab feast. And no, not the *bad kind* – let’s keep it wholesome! This particular gastronomic adventure unfolded at the renowned Cabin John Crab Feast, a true institution for anyone looking to dive into the heart of Maryland’s vibrant seafood culture.

While my afternoon was undoubtedly *filled* with crabs, by the end of the feast, I wasn’t necessarily *full* from the sheer volume of crab meat. As many seasoned crab aficionados will attest, the laborious, yet immensely satisfying, process of extracting the succulent meat from these crustaceans likely burns more calories than you actually consume. It’s an amusing, almost ritualistic, food custom when you truly consider it. We spend what feels like an eternity armed with wooden mallets and metal pliers, diligently cracking and picking away at hard shells, all for a few precious tablespoons of sweet, tender meat. Is it peculiar? Absolutely. Is it worth every single effort? Without a shadow of a doubt, yes, absolutely!

The Maryland Crab Feast: More Than Just a Meal, It’s an Experience

A Maryland crab feast is far more than just eating; it’s a sensory and social spectacle. The air is thick with the aroma of steamed blue crabs, generously seasoned with the legendary Old Bay spice blend. Tables are typically covered in brown paper, ready for the glorious mess that is about to ensue. The clatter of mallets against shells creates a rhythmic backdrop, punctuated by laughter and conversation. It’s a communal dining experience that forces you to slow down, engage with your food, and, most importantly, enjoy the company around you.

This particular feast was also an opportunity to gather and bid a temporary farewell to my dear blogger buddy, Caroline. She was embarking on a month-long job-traveling adventure, a clear sign that we are indeed navigating the exciting, sometimes bewildering, world of adulthood. Fun, right?

While the immediate rewards of crab eating might seem modest in terms of caloric intake, the joy it brings is immense. There’s a wonderful, low-key entertainment factor to it. You’ll never feel uncomfortably full to the point of nausea, which is a rare feat at any “feast.” One of the best parts? No one bats an eyelash if your face or hands end up caked with Old Bay and crab juices. In fact, it’s practically a badge of honor. And should an enthusiastic smash send a piece of crab shell flying across the table – or even to a neighboring one – it’s all part of the accepted chaos and charm. Seriously, at one point during our meal, a surprisingly large piece of shell landed on our table from another four feet away. Given the presence of many energetic kids, such occurrences are almost expected!

Smashing Crab

Amidst the crab-cracking, I also spotted one of those classic wooden cup-and-ball toys. I can’t quite recall their official name, but they instantly transported me back to a 4th-grade talent show. A contestant, bless his heart, attempted a five-minute routine, throwing the ball into the air repeatedly and only managing to catch it on the string about 1% of the time. Yet, he seemed completely unfazed – a true master of perseverance!

Choosing Your Feast: Crabs, Sides, or Chicken?

A single ticket to the Cabin John Crab Feast offered three distinct options:

  • 6 crabs
  • 3 crabs and 3 sides
  • Chicken and 3 sides

Believe it or not, a significant number of attendees opted for the chicken! While initially tempting to go for the full six crabs, my practical side (and perhaps a realistic assessment of my crab-picking stamina) led me to choose the half-and-half option: three crabs and three sides. The crabs, though delicious, were on the smaller side, making the effort-to-meat ratio even more pronounced. My concern wasn’t whether I *could* eat six crabs, but whether I had the *energy* to labor through all of them. For sides, I selected collard greens and cinnamon-spiced carrots. I was pleasantly surprised by the collard greens – having never tried them before, I found them quite good! In hindsight, I wished I had pushed for the full six crabs, but the hearty vegetables did a fine job of filling me up. Fortunately, my kind-hearted boyfriend took pity on my crab deficit and generously offered one of his. How sweet of him!

Post-Feast Adventures: Climbing Walls, Craftsman Homes & Pumpkin Patches

After the “rigorous” consumption of crab (and I use that term with a healthy dose of sarcasm), we decided a mini-workout was in order. Taking inspiration from the enthusiastic kids around us, we bravely attempted the climbing wall. Alas, it was barely taller than me, so our rock-climbing careers were short-lived. To compensate, I suggested a leisurely walk through the charming local neighborhood.

Though I might not have mentioned it extensively on the blog before, one of my absolute favorite pastimes is admiring houses. Call me a real estate junkie! My name is Laura, and I have a deep affection for Craftsman-style houses. I’m drawn to their sturdy elegance, the inviting aesthetics of wrap-around porches, rustic shingles, and beautifully arranged flower pots. The house pictured below, in particular, captured my imagination.

Since I was a little girl, perhaps even as young as ten, visiting open houses with my dad on weekends has been a cherished tradition. I’m fairly certain real estate agents are thrilled when we enthusiastically declare we’re “just checking them out for fun!” But hey, while some kids loved games, I reveled in interior design and daydreaming about decorating my future home. And, like almost every other foodie out there, my absolute favorite room to snoop around in is, without a doubt, the kitchen. My excitement reaches peak levels if I spot elegant Carrera marble countertops and gleaming Viking appliances!

My excitement also peaks when I encounter thriving food gardens, a sure sign that fall has officially arrived! This means it’s unequivocally PUMPKIN season – a delightful herald of cooler weather and cozy vibes.

A Sweet Finale: Discovering Dolcezza Gelato in Downtown Bethesda

After our climbing wall escapade and invigorating walk, the three of us found ourselves surprisingly hungry again. In fact, it almost felt as if we hadn’t eaten at all! So, naturally, we did what any rational beings would do: head out for some indulgent gelato!

Our destination was downtown Bethesda, an area that has truly blossomed over the past year, doubling its offerings of pedestrian-friendly restaurants, charming shops (including a fantastic Le Creuset store!), unique boutiques, and, crucially for our current craving, an abundance of ice cream and dessert establishments.

Bethesda is also home to one of DC’s famous Georgetown Cupcakes bakeries. Unsurprisingly, a formidable 100-foot line snaked out the door. I overheard a bewildered young boy wisely remark to his mom, “They’re just cupcakes!” Well said, young man, well said.

After much deliberation between tangy fro-yo and creamy gelato, we finally settled on gelato from the absolutely incredible Dolcezza. While it certainly wasn’t cheap (this particular cup set me back $5.65!), Dolcezza offers artisanal, daily-made Argentinean-style gelato crafted exclusively from seasonal, local ingredients. They also proudly claim their gelato contains half the fat and, consequently, half the calories of regular gelato. My taste buds, however, gleefully beg to differ – it tastes just as rich and decadent as any full-fat indulgence!

Dolcezza is celebrated for its incredibly creative and innovative flavors. Offerings like Lime Cilantro, Red Watermelon Vodka, Thai Coconut Milk, and Lemon Opal Basil are just a few examples that showcase their adventurous spirit and commitment to fresh, exciting combinations.

Following a delightful series of “tastings” – which included Banana Foster, Orange-Cardamom-Honey, and White Peach – and about ten minutes of serious decision-making, I finally settled on two half-scoops. This is a brilliant strategy that most reputable ice cream and gelato parlors allow, and I highly recommend it if you’re eager to sample a variety of flavors without committing to a larger size.

So, what did I get?

Valrhona Chocolate Amargo (Bittersweet) & Yellow Peach-Southern Comfort

Dolcezza gelato

OH. MY. GOD. Both flavors were simply out of this world! I can confidently say this was probably the best gelato I’ve ever had, even surpassing some of the highly acclaimed gelato I tasted in Italy. The Valrhona chocolate was incredibly thick, intensely chocolatey, but because it was bittersweet, it wasn’t at all overpowering. I’m typically not a huge fan of chocolate desserts, often finding them too sugary and lacking in true chocolate depth. This gelato completely defied those expectations. The Yellow Peach Southern Comfort perfectly cut through the richness of the chocolate with its delightful tartness. I couldn’t distinctly taste the Southern Comfort, but its inclusion might explain why the peach flavor wasn’t overly sweet – a testament to the old adage that alcohol can temper sweetness in desserts.

Caroline’s Pick: Valrhona Chocolate Amargo & Milk Chocolate (I can’t recall the exact name!)

Dolcezza gelato

For those unfamiliar, Valrhona is widely recognized as one of the finest brands of chocolate available. If you’re serious about creating an exceptional chocolate dessert and need high-quality bittersweet chocolate for baking, I highly recommend investing a little more in Valrhona or similarly excellent brands like Scharffen Berger. You can often find these premium chocolates at specialty cooking stores or Whole Foods. Using such high-caliber ingredients truly makes a profound difference in the final product, transforming a good dessert into an extraordinary one.

Downtown Bethesda

If you ever find yourself in the DC metropolitan area, making a trip to Dolcezza in Bethesda is an absolute must! Both you and your discerning taste buds will undoubtedly leave thoroughly impressed and completely satisfied.

Conclusion: A Day of Delights in Maryland

From the messy, joyful chaos of a traditional Maryland crab feast at Cabin John to exploring charming Craftsman homes and indulging in sublime artisanal gelato in bustling Bethesda, my Saturday was a perfect blend of local culture, personal passions, and delicious discoveries. It was a day that truly celebrated the unique flavors and experiences Maryland has to offer.

While I haven’t yet braved the challenge of making homemade gelato (though I have several intriguing recipes, especially Mario Batali’s, catching my eye), for those who enjoy crafting their own frozen delights, I invite you to explore my recipe for Homemade Champagne Mango Lime Sorbet. The best part? You don’t even need an ice cream maker to create this refreshing treat!
