The Weekly Fix

Oakland Adventures: Family Joy, Culinary Discoveries, and Essential Weekly Finds

Greetings from the sunny and wonderfully vibrant city of Oakland, California! I’m currently enjoying a delightful visit with my sister, brother-in-law, and their adorable new addition, my sweet niece, Cayla. While I’ll spare you an excessive flood of baby photos here (you can catch all the precious updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses on my Instagram stories!), rest assured, she is absolutely, undeniably precious and has completely stolen our hearts.

Beyond the immense joy of family time, this trip to Oakland has been a feast for the senses. I’ve found myself captivated by the unique flora, snapping approximately 58 photos of various bougainvillea and cacti plants that adorn the landscapes here. The glorious, humidity-free weather has been an absolute dream – a refreshing change that I’m soaking up every moment of. And oh, the hills! As someone accustomed to the flatter terrains of the Midwest, I simply adore these steep incline hills. They offer not just a fantastic workout but also breathtaking views, adding an adventurous charm to every stroll. It’s truly a different world, and I’m loving every bit of this Californian experience.

Before diving into some of my latest discoveries and recommendations, I wanted to quickly highlight a couple of recent posts on the blog that you might have missed. Earlier this week, I shared my second farmer’s market ingredient spotlight post, focusing on the seasonal delight of sour cherries. These vibrant fruits are not only incredibly delicious but also versatile, perfect for baking, sauces, or even just snacking. If you’re looking for inspiration to make the most of your local farmer’s market finds, this series is designed just for you, encouraging seasonal eating and culinary exploration.

And that’s not all! I also unveiled three fantastic make-ahead smoothie cup recipes. Seriously, if your mornings are anything like mine – a whirlwind of activity – these are an absolute game-changer. Prepping them over the weekend means you can simply blend and go on busy weekdays, ensuring you kickstart your day with a nutritious and delicious meal. They’re a true lifesaver, offering convenience without compromising on health or flavor. If you have any extra time this weekend, I highly recommend dedicating a few minutes to preparing a batch for the upcoming week; your future self will thank you!

Weekly Favorites: Culinary Delights and Lifestyle Gems

Beyond the scenic views and family cuddles, I’ve been keeping an eye out for inspiring recipes and noteworthy finds. Here are a few things that have truly captured my attention and affection this week:

  • A Unique Twist on Pie: Rye Crust Sour Cherry Pie

Have you ever experimented with rye flour in your baking? My experience is somewhat limited, but I am absolutely enamored with the rustic and sophisticated look of this Sour Cherry Pie with a Rye Crust. The idea of incorporating rye flour, known for its slightly nutty and earthy flavor, into a sweet pie crust is incredibly intriguing. It promises to add a depth of flavor that would beautifully complement the tartness of sour cherries, making for a less cloyingly sweet and more complex dessert. It’s a delightful departure from traditional pie crusts and definitely on my list to try this summer when sour cherries are at their peak.

  • The Perfect Summer Indulgence: Coffee Cajeta Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

When it comes to summer treats, homemade ice cream holds a special place in my heart. My idea of the perfect flavor combination right now is undoubtedly this Coffee Cajeta Chocolate Chip Ice Cream recipe. Imagine the rich, invigorating notes of coffee swirling with the caramelized sweetness of cajeta (goat’s milk caramel), all punctuated by delightful pockets of chocolate chips. It sounds like a sophisticated yet utterly comforting blend, ideal for cooling down on a warm evening. This recipe feels like a gourmet treat you’d find at an artisan ice cream shop, but made right in your own kitchen – pure bliss!

  • Light and Refreshing: Citrus Shrimp Avocado Salad

For those days when you crave something light, fresh, and bursting with flavor, this Citrus Shrimp Avocado Salad is exactly what you need. It embodies everything I love about summer meals: it’s quick to prepare, requires minimal cooking, and is incredibly satisfying. The combination of succulent shrimp, creamy avocado, and bright citrus creates a vibrant and healthy dish that feels indulgent without being heavy. It’s perfect for a quick lunch, a light dinner, or even as a refreshing side dish for a backyard barbecue. I truly can’t wait to make this one!

  • A Chocolate Lover’s Dream: Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake with Milk Chocolate Cloud Frosting

Prepare yourselves, chocolate enthusiasts, because this Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake with Milk Chocolate Cloud Frosting looks like something straight out of a dream. The sheer decadence of triple chocolate is enough to grab anyone’s attention, but then you add “cloud frosting,” and I’m completely sold! The idea of a frosting that’s light, airy, and milky, yet rich enough to complement a dense fudge cake, sounds like a match made in heaven. This isn’t just a cake; it’s an experience, perfect for celebrations or simply indulging a serious chocolate craving. It’s definitely on my baking bucket list!

  • Trader Joe’s Treasury: 46 Favorite Finds

If you’re a Trader Joe’s fan (and honestly, who isn’t? Their unique product line and friendly atmosphere are legendary!), Monique from Ambitious Kitchen has rounded up 46 favorite finds for you to try out. Sadly, I rarely make it to Trader Joe’s due to current car restraints and its distance, which means I’m seriously missing out on their ever-evolving array of innovative and delicious products. This list serves as a fantastic reminder and a strong motivation to plan a dedicated trip soon. From snacks to pantry staples to frozen delights, Trader Joe’s always has something new and exciting to discover, and lists like these are invaluable for navigating their incredible selection.

  • Homemade Take-Out Perfection: Real Lo Mein Recipe

I must admit, I almost never go out for Chinese food. However, that doesn’t mean the craving for delicious, comforting Chinese take-out doesn’t hit from time to time! That’s why this make-at-home “Real Lo Mein” recipe is absolutely perfect. It promises to satisfy those specific cravings with fresh ingredients and the satisfaction of a homemade meal. Making take-out at home gives you control over the ingredients, often resulting in a fresher and healthier version of your favorite dishes. This recipe looks authentic and approachable, allowing you to whip up a fantastic stir-fried noodle dish whenever the mood strikes, without ever having to leave your kitchen.

  • A Mediterranean Staple: Baba Ganoush Roasted Eggplant Dip

All my favorite ingredients coming together in one delicious, summery dip? Sign me up! This Baba Ganoush Roasted Eggplant Dip is a celebration of simple, wholesome flavors. Roasted eggplant, creamy tahini, bright lemon juice, and aromatic garlic are the stars of this classic Mediterranean spread. It’s incredibly versatile – perfect with warm pita bread, fresh vegetable sticks, or even as a spread in sandwiches and wraps. Baba Ganoush is not only delicious but also a fantastic way to enjoy vegetables, making it a healthy and satisfying addition to any meal or snack spread. Its smoky, savory profile is truly irresistible.

  • The Ultimate Comfort: These Bras Live Up to the Hype

And for something completely different but equally important for daily comfort: you guys, these bras genuinely live up to all the hype! I often hesitate to recommend clothing items without extensive testing, but I can personally attest to the quality and comfort of these. I own four of them, and they have held up incredibly well through countless washes and wears, maintaining their shape and support. More importantly, they are unbelievably comfortable – truly a testament to thoughtful design. If you’ve been on the hunt for a reliable and comfortable everyday bra, now is the perfect time to snag one (or a few!) because they’re part of the Nordstrom sale. Investing in good, supportive, and comfortable undergarments makes a huge difference in how you feel throughout your day, and these are absolutely worth it.
