The Week’s Medley

Embracing Summer’s Best: Weekly Adventures, Culinary Delights, and Inspiration

Happy Friday, or is it? The past week has felt like a delightful blur, courtesy of a mid-week holiday that completely reset my internal clock. With unexpected time off for Connor during the Fourth of July festivities, the days have blended into a lovely, albeit confusing, rhythm. It’s the kind of temporal disorientation that makes you appreciate the simple anchor of a weekly check-in, bringing us all back to a shared understanding of what day it is and what joyful things are happening around us. So, let’s officially kick off our weekend with a fresh perspective and a look at the good things unfolding.

Fresh Red Currants in a bowl

First, a sincere apology for the quieter-than-usual week here on the recipe front! My attention has been completely captivated by several large, exciting projects bubbling on the horizon. While I can’t spill all the details just yet, rest assured these endeavors are designed to bring even more valuable and delicious content your way. I promise that things will return to our regular schedule of fresh, innovative recipes starting next week. And speaking of fresh, I am absolutely buzzing with excitement to dive into some serious baking projects, especially with the incredible bounty of berries available at the farmer’s market right now. Just look at those vibrant, jewel-toned red currants above – they’re practically begging to be transformed into a tart, a compote, or perhaps a stunning summer cake. The sheer variety of seasonal fruits, from plump blueberries and juicy raspberries to fragrant strawberries, is a constant source of inspiration, and I’m already envisioning countless ways to incorporate them into both sweet and savory dishes.

Marley’s Happy Place: Escaping the City Grind

Happy dog Marley in a field

Last weekend, we embarked on a much-needed escape from the urban hustle, driving out to Marley’s absolute favorite spot in the entire city: Prairie Wolf, a magnificent 40-acre off-leash dog park. It’s truly a haven, not just for Marley, but for us too. While Marley has always been quite reliable off-leash (though I wouldn’t dare test him in unfenced areas!), this visit was particularly special. He embraced the freedom with an unmatched enthusiasm, rolling gleefully in the lush green grass, digging with an almost scientific fervor, “swimming” with joyous splashes in the cool pond, and sprinting across the expansive fields with boundless energy. Witnessing his pure, unadulterated happiness in his natural element was a profound reminder of the simple joys in life.

Living in the bustling city certainly has its charms, but there’s an undeniable magic in giving Marley – and ourselves – the chance to break free from the concrete jungle. These excursions allow us to reconnect with nature, breathe in fresh air, and appreciate the raw, simple beauty of open spaces. It encourages us to pause, observe, and truly soak in the “little things” that often get overlooked in the rush of daily life. It was a perfect way to recharge and witness the pure joy of our furry companion.

On that note, I sincerely hope you all had a wonderfully safe and joyful holiday, surrounded by friends, family, and perhaps a few moments of peaceful reflection. These shared moments of celebration and relaxation are truly what make summer so special.
